Providing diagnostic services in Nepal is not only about having equipment and expertise. It’s about staying consistent, maintaining strict quality controls, and delivering the same standard of reporting across different settings and regions. At National Reference Laboratory (nrl), that discipline has been part of our work culture from the very start.
Established in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, on 07 Magh 2061 (20 January 2005), NRL has grown into a trusted diagnostic partner for hospitals, medical professionals, and individuals across Nepal. With service points in Biratnagar, Pokhara, Chitwan, and Birtamod, and also a steadily expanding footprint beyond these cities, our responsibility remains the same: accurate results, timely reporting, and dependable diagnostics.
Our services cover a wide range of laboratory testing, including routine investigations, immunoassays, ELISA-based specialized testing, molecular diagnostics, and preventive health screening. Along the way, we have also worked to strengthen modern laboratory practices in Nepal—through structured sample handling, consistent processes, and reporting systems designed to support clinical decision-making.
The real strength of NRL, however, comes from our people. Our technologists, pathologists, and support teams follow strict SOPs, quality assurance systems, and internationally aligned practices such as WHO GLP principles. That discipline is what protects accuracy—day after day, sample after sample.
As Managing Director, my responsibility is to ensure that quality remains uniform across all services and locations. Through training, internal reviews, and continuous improvement, we reinforce the same standard that NRL has been trusted for since 2005. To date, we have served over twenty lakh patients and performed more than fifty lakh tests, and we treat that number as a responsibility—not an achievement.
At the National Reference Laboratory (NRL), we will continue to earn trust in the only way it can be earned. Through consistent quality, transparent practices, and results that healthcare professionals and patients can depend on.
Welcome to the National Reference Laboratory (NRL).
Healthcare in Nepal comes with realities that are very different from many parts of the world. Geography, access, and infrastructure all shape how care is delivered. In that context, diagnostic laboratories carry a special responsibility. A test report isn’t just a document; it often becomes the basis for decisions that affect real lives.
National Reference Laboratory (nrl) was founded in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu on 07 Magh 2061 (20 January 2005) with this responsibility in mind. From the beginning, our focus has been clear: accurate reporting, dependable service, and practices that clinicians can rely on with confidence.
As the years progressed, we expanded beyond Kathmandu to serve a wider healthcare community through key service points in Biratnagar (21 Baisakh 2070), Pokhara (10 Asar 2070), Chitwan (08 Ashwin 2070), and Birtamod (01 Poush 2071) followed by further advancements in the years since. Wherever we operate, one expectation remains unchanged—the standard must stay the same.
As Chairman, my role is to ensure that sound governance, ethical practice, and accountability remain central to how the laboratory functions. Technology matters, quality systems matter—but ultimately, they must lead to one outcome: trust. Trust from patients who want reassurance, and trust from clinicians who need reliable information to treat with confidence.
I thank our team for the professionalism they demonstrate every day, and I also thank every doctor, hospital, and individual who chooses National Reference Laboratory (NRL). We remain committed to being a laboratory that Nepal can depend on—today, and for the long term.
